Start with a free option. Free Claude Code plugins exist in the same install surface as shipcheck, and for a native app with a simple dependency tree they may be all you need. The honest reasons to pay are React Native and Expo depth, and a policy corpus somebody maintains.
The three axes that actually differentiate these tools
Where your code goes. Web-based checkers need an upload or a repository grant. shipcheck runs inside the Claude Code session already open on your machine and uploads nothing. For a developer with client code or an unreleased product this is a gate rather than a preference.
Whether it understands the dependency tree. Metadata and content checks are framework-independent and well served everywhere. Transitive privacy manifests, Expo config-plugin side effects and generated-project pitfalls are not, and they are where RN and Expo apps lose cycles.
Whether the policy corpus is demonstrably current. Every tool claims to check against "the guidelines." Apple and Google change them continuously. A tool that can show you a diff of what changed since your last scan is making a checkable claim; one that cannot is making a marketing one.
